Editorialâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ¦ K12: for Globalization By: Hazel Hablador After considering various proposals, K12 Program finally took its step towards globalization. Officially, the implementation of this program had started this School Year 2012-2013. Despite of the shortcomings such as lack of school facilities, classrooms, and teachers, the government believes that Philippine Education needs this program in order to decongest and enhance the basic education curriculum and provide better quality education for all which is the demand in the global market. The model that is currently proposed by the Dep-Ed is the K-6-4-2 Model. This model embroils Kindergarten, six years of elementary education, four years junior high school (grades 7-10), and two years senior high school (grades 11-12). The two years senior high school anticipates running time for students to consolidate acquired academic skills competencies. With the help of k12, we can show the world that we can compete globally. Upshot to this are accelerated economic growth, mutual recognition of Filipino graduates and professionals in other countries and positive overall impact on society. This is the best step that the government had imposed for the betterment of all. Let us always remember that whatever changes that may happen in the education system of our country, it is still part of our learning. We just need to follow and widen our fruitage of knowledge so that whatever zigzag road we may take, at the end, the road we have taken is still peaceful and bountiful. This is the change that will bring us to a new life and will make us competent to other countries. The Joy of Triumph (A simple Talk to a Queen) By: Jenalyn Gonzaga and April Rose Lindong It was early in the morning of October 5, 2012 when I was walking along the corridor to attend the Worldââ¬â¢s Teachersââ¬â¢ Day; I met the reigning queen of WVSU-LC 2012. In a far distance I spotted the exotic beauty of Rita Marie Penado so I turned my way just to meet her. The crowned queen was very approachable and kind hearted so I invited her for a short chat. ââ¬Å"Hello Miss Rita can I ask you a favor?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes what is it?â⬠ââ¬Å"I just want to ask you about the pageantâ⬠. ââ¬Å"What did you feel w2hen you were crowned as Miss WVSU-LC?â⬠Rita replied with a sweet smile on her face ââ¬Å"well, when I was crowned as Miss WVSU-LC 2012, I couldnââ¬â¢t exactly explain what my feeling was. It was unexplainable happiness. My tears run down my eyes; tears of joy. Likewise, I felt proud of my school. I didnââ¬â¢t expect of winning the crown but I did. Itââ¬â¢s because I trust God. ââ¬Å"Wow thatââ¬â¢s great! ââ¬Å"What are your preparations before the grand pageant?â⬠ââ¬Å"Actually, Iââ¬â¢m not prepared like the other candidates. All I did was set my mind for the pageant, a little bit of practice and pray for Godââ¬â¢s guidance during the pageant. Thatââ¬â¢s all, nothing less, nothing more.â⬠ââ¬Å"Really? What do you feel when you are walking on stage?â⬠ââ¬Å"Definitely, I wasà nervous, so nervous that I couldnââ¬â¢t stand nor looked straight to the judges as well as the audiences. I imagined a crowd was looking at me. Oh My Gosh! That was my first time to join a pageant. I thought of stepping back, but never did me. The worst about it was Iââ¬â¢m not even expecting to win the crown.â⬠Rita told me with open heart. To be continued on page ..4 AGONY OF DEFEAT By: Richen Lindres and Anthea Lebanan After such tremendous victory winning the cheerdance competition it is surprising to say the least. Suddenly we are presented with a series of failure that stands and striking contrast for the wonderful victorious of the past two years. How instructive this if we only have the ears to listen to the message of this: ââ¬Å"the thrill of victory was so quickly replaced by the agony of defeatâ⬠. This is the story of defeat. This the story of life and something we must learn to deal within our daily walk. One minute, we can be living in victory and next is defeat. The whistle blew. It was all over. The long practices and hard game, all the running and training, all the tough and shooting, all the pasta parties and toilet papering, everything. Over, ended, done. Why? Because the whistle had blown.as one team run off the field for joy and excitement, the other walked off in utter disappointment . as one side cheered, the other cried. The opposing team had left, the crowds had cleared, but our team just sat at our bench, looking, staring, and glaring at the empty field; mud patches and torn up grass everywhere. Poster everywhere, some hug high on the windows and some still sturdy on walls while others hung by a thread , others were just thrown to the ground by one-lookers and still more hung on fences wishing, wanting, hoping, for nothing but for the best of the team. Everyone stood, sat, laid looking at the field in amazing filled with disappointment, anger and sadness all the same time, trying to comprehend how everything they had worked so hard for had come to an end so quickly. Put to an end by the blow of the whistle. Thinking back to all the perfect opportunities..missed, all the unlucky touches or unconnected passed wondering what would have happenedà if one thing had been done differently. Tears, hugs, words, it was all enough; it all meant nothing. It wasnââ¬â¢t supposed to end like this, and yet, with the final whistle, it did. Everyone now is experiencing the agony of defeat. Some days when they are sitting in class, staring out the window, at the field, they remember, they wonder, they wish, they push it out of their minds, still experiencing the agony of defeat. It was a pleasure to have a talk with you. Rita just gave a big ââ¬Å"hahahahahahahahhahaâ⬠We exchanged laughter together. It was a great moment for me to have a chat with the reigning queen. Despite of the rain and muddy field, Eagles (School of Criminology) made it to the top when they smashed down the Torches (School of Education) during the championship game of football women last September 15, 2012. The Eagles beat down the torches with the score of 1-0 on the first half. Another ball was made to goal on the second half score of Eagles. The game ended with the tally of 2-0. Lauron Ambition is part and parcel of everyoneââ¬â¢s life. It serves as a guiding star that lights our way to triumph. I never expected to be future teacher someday, but as time passes by, the feeling of being a future educator someday had eventually embraced me I grew up in a poor family, my father was a farmer and we are 10 in the family. I know the situation that we have during that time. I was the youngest but still the faith that I have in my heart is to help my parents in return of their sacrifices that they had. It is the farthest school which is 12- 14 kilometers walking distance from our house. For me this was only a start of my life. The next level of my life in school was totally a great sacrifice. It is now my college life. There are times in that I am about to cry because the boredom and longing for my family. I had to be strong and forget the loneliness; instead I focused on my studies. As an aspiring teacher, I worked hard for it. All my pains and sacrifices resulted in a reward. This is now the time that 6months from now I am about to graduate in this university. West Visayas State University- Lambunao Campus. I guess thereââ¬â¢s always a first time for everything no matter how old we are. For the last semester a series of ââ¬Å"Firstâ⬠followed: * This was my first to handle a class with heterogeneous pupils. * First time to experience a pupil that urinated and eliminated his waste while the class was going on. * First time to have a pupil who goes home in tears without any reason at all. * Lastly , I had for the first time a parent scolded me for making her child upset because I scolded him for being absent in my class and teasing his other classmates to make noise inside the classroom. Based on my own experiences, I learned a lot of things after the OJT and it really transforms me to a new creature. Well I guess this was the most essential part of being an aspiring teacher. To exploreà and to adjust what is going on in our new environment. That is a specialty of a teacher that no one could ever had. Lastly, I would say that poverty is not an obstacle to higher education but a mere challenge to fight for a professional survival and achieve your dreams in your most noble way

Free Essays - Escape from Reality in A Farewell to Arms :: Farewell Arms Essays
Escape from Reality in A Farewell to Arms In Ernest Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms, Fredric Henry gets involved with Catherine Barkley to escape the insanity of war. Frederic loves Catherine. Catherine loves Frederic. The extreme situation of war and fate allowed both of them to be thrown together and fall in love. This love for one another was an escape into another world for Frederic. It provided him emotionally with a private place, where he could go to separate and evade the horrible realities of war occurring in and around him. Under any other normal circumstances this love probably would have never happened, but the pitcher had the curve ball in for Frederic from the first throw. He wanted him out. From the beginning, Frederic and Catherine's relationship started in a strange state. Frederic knew Catherine was a little cooky, but he still continued to pursue her. He did not even love her at first, but he still needed a way of escaping his present situation, so he decided what the hell, and went after her. Plus, he really didn't think he had anything to loose. There were no stakes named from the start. He didn't really care if he lost anyway. "I did not love Catherine Barkley nor had any idea of loving her. This was a game, like bridge, in which you said things instead of playing cards. Like bridge you had to pretend you were playing for money or playing for some stakes. Nobody had mentioned what the stakes were. It was all right with me. (Hemingway, 30-31) But this is where Frederic made his mistake. He kept his distance from right and wrong regarding war and love. He had separated himself from war and seemed to have no place in it at all, mentally or physically (for example when he is in the hospital in Book Two). But when Aymo is killed by his own army, Frederic discovers the reality that he is not really separated from this event at all. He is very much part of this war whether he likes it or not. At this point, he seems to go a little crazy himself and gets scared. He needs a way to escape immediately and ends up separating himself again through love. Frederic had not been prepared for the stress and pressure of the reality he had faultily deluded himself from.

Monarchy Restoration
King Charles I was born at Fife in Scotland on 19th November 1600 and was the son of James VI and Anne of Denmark. His father was to become King James I in 1603 after succeeding Queen Elizabeth I to come to the throne of England. At Baptism in December 1600 Charles was created Duke of Albany and in 1605 became the Duke of York. (Carlton, Charles. 95). Charles had an elder brother named Prince Henry who overshadowed Charles in every manner; unfortunately he passed on when Charles was 12 years old. Charles became the heir to the throne of the 3 Kingdoms that included England, Scotland and Ireland. In 1625 he was to become the second Stuart King. It was during this period that there was immense pressure from the English Protestants for the intervention against Spain in the religious wars that were prevalent in Europe between the Catholics and the Protestants. (Murphy, Derrick, 215) King Charles allowed the unpopular Duke of Buckingham to direct Englandââ¬â¢s foreign policy, the introduce disastrous military exploitation against Spain and France. Parliament tried to Impeach Buckingham towards which Charles dissolved the first two. The Third Parliament drew the Petition of Right to contain Charlesââ¬â¢ abuse of power. During his reign he continued to suppress any form of dissent and continued to alienate himself from the people. He even went ahead and married Henrietta Maria a French Catholic cause some disquiet amongst the Protestants. Against this backdrop tension went on to build up until 22 August 1642 when the Civil War broke out. The Parliament using the navy that Charles had helped equip, won London. This forced Charles to set up court and military at Oxford. (Carlton, Charles,143). Afterwards Through Charles command, the Royalist Army was able to experience some victories. They defeated Sir William Waller at the battle of Cropredy Bridge and in the summer of 1644 defeated the Earl of Essex at Lostwithiel. However the army was hit arguments and jealousies especially amongst the senior officers. This coupled by Charlesââ¬â¢ indecisiveness hampered greatly the armyââ¬â¢s effort. Parliament/Scottish alliance formed a formidable army called the New Model Army. (Kenyon, John & Ohlmeyer, Jane, 155). It was this army that defeated the Royalists in 1645. Charles fled Oxford in 1646 and surrendered to the Scottish army. While here he tried to exploit the divisions between the Parliamentarians and the Scots. These antics would eventually lead to the Second Civil war of 1648 where Cromwell defeated the Scots. Charles was to be captured and later on beheaded at Whitehall on 30th January 1649. (Carlton, Charles, 195). Oliver Cromwell He was born in Huntington on 25th April 1599; he is played a major role in bringng to trial and eventual execution of Charles I. He became the only non-Royal ever to hold the position of The Lord Protector of England.à He rose through the ranks to become this powerful and had the most complete and most brutal army. The army was credited with the conquest over the English neighbors. He is considered to be on one of the most controversial figures in history.à Some historians view him as the defender of the principles of liberties, and advocate of religious freedom and diversity (he inculcated the respect for God) and others view him as a tyrant, bigot and murderer. The latter view was because left behind a legacy of massacres in Ireland. He imposed military rule. (Murphy, Derrick, 226) In 1658, Cromwell declared that his son Richard Cromwell should replace him as Lord Protector Of the Commonwealth. This decision did not excite the English Army because Richard was a mere country farmer unlike his father who was a skilful military officer. After Oliver Cromwellââ¬â¢s death on 3rd September 1658, his son succeeded him as the Lord Protector. However the army generals forced him to retire from government in May 1659.After the Restoration in 1660 Cromwellââ¬â¢s body was exhumed from the tomb of Kings in Westminster Abbey and was hanged at Tyburn. (Murphy, Derrick, 225) After Richardsââ¬â¢s departure, General George Monk who was the army officer in charge of the English army in Scotland marched to London in 1660 with his army and restored the House of Lords and the Parliament 1640. It was compost mainly of Royalists who went ahead to restore the Monarch to Charles II, who pardoned the Parliamentary army and continued with the Commonwealthââ¬â¢s policy of religious tolerance. Puritans lost political power and would not be allowed in the House of Commons. It was during his reign that the Monarch was restored to its original form. (Miller, John, 185). Human Rights And Community Development - 919 Words
An understanding and a commitment to fundamental human rights is also an important principle of community development. Human rights are important for community work in both the negative sense the protection of human rights and the positive sense the promotion of human rights (Ife, 1995). In the negative sense it is important that any community development project conform to the principles of basic human rights. Community structures should be established in such a way that they do not contravene these principles. For example, the right to meaningful work, the right to freedom of association and the right to freedom of expression need to be safeguarded. In the more positive sense the achievement of the ideals of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights ca be used as a goal for community development. The right to an adequate standard of living, the right to education, the right to participate in the cultural life of the community, the right to self-determination and the right of the fa mily to protection and assistance should be the focus for community development (Ife, 1995). Ministry of Manpower (MOM) - Free Essay Example
Sample details Pages: 5 Words: 1474 Downloads: 6 Date added: 2017/06/26 Category Politics Essay Type Narrative essay Did you like this example? Singapore is a multiculturalism country where the total labor market consists 3.45 million people. Out of 3.45 million people, 1.3 million of them consists of foreigners mainly in the manufacturing and construction industry which does not appeal to most of the Singaporeans (Ministry of Manpower, 2013). As a country with no natural resources, Singapore relies on its human capital to sustain its economy. Foreign workers and talents are an important aspect in the human capital because of the low population of locals. Ministry of Manpower (MOM), the leading government agency of Singapore, formulates and implement employment policies. The Employment Act in Singapore is the main labor law in Singapore and work in line with international labor legislation and standards. Under the Act, the contract of service must contain and state clearly the key components such as job designation, salary, work hours per week employeeà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢s benefits and conditions for ter mination of employment contact to eliminate any manipulation of terms by both the employer and employees. The Employment Acts however, does not covers all employees. It does not apply to Managerial and Executive positions where the person has authority or influence in hiring, promotion or reward. Workers with specialized skills who has the similar responsibility as a manager is also not covered under the act. Domestic workers, seaman and most of the government staffs are also not covered under the Employment Act. Most hiring companies prefers foreign workers due to their low wages as labor costs contributes a huge percentage of the companyà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢s cost. Due to the relatively relaxed policies in hiring foreigners in Singapore, locals are expressing unhappiness and feel that foreigner are taking away their jobs and eroding the national identity. Under Employment of Foreign Manpower Act (Chapter 91A), foreigners who wish to work in Singapore will need to apply for w ork passes. These passes are categorized under Employment Pass, S Pass and Work Permit. Employment Pass are issued to professionals who earn at least $3300 a month and will be cancelled once the holder left the employer. S Pass are issued to mid-level skilled foreigners who earn at least $2000 a month. Work permit are issued to low to mid-level skilled workers. These different passes allow the regulating organization to keep track on the numbers of skilled to non-skilled foreign workers in Singapore to ensure that locals are also treated fairly in the hiring process. Levies and Foreign worker quota are also implemented to regulate the foreign workers in Singapore. A certain number of local workers will need to be met in order for the hiring company to hire 1 foreign worker. This is to ensure that firms will be fair in their hiring process and not discriminate and avoid hiring local workers. Foreign labors help boost Singapore economy however, due to the large numbers of foreign w orkers in Singapore, locals are being discriminated. Some of the firms which are operated by foreign management may prefer hiring their own countrymen or permit holders as opposed to Singaporean. An example would be a Swiss restaurant, La Fondue at Dempsey Road, which posted a discriminatory job advertisements that stated they only hire Filipinos (Tan, 2013). La Fondue was barred from hiring new foreign workers for 6 months and required a public apology to be published. Foreign workers are attractive to most company in Singapore due to its low cost, however hiring company in Singapore will need to make an effort to consider Singaporean workers fairly. MOM recently have been phasing in measures to further tighten the hiring of foreigners after facing critic from Singaporeans. They imposed tighter measures to firms that have disproportionately low concentration of Singaporean workers at professional levels and firms which favoring their own compatriots when hiring (Brinded, 2013). Due to the tightening regulations on hiring of foreign workers, these might affect the economic growth in Singapore due to higher labor costs. As labor cost increases, firms are forced to retrench workers, downsize or even move out of Singapore (Goh, 2013). Singaporeà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢s exports suffered a decline, losing its competitiveness to Malaysia and South Korea due to the tightening of foreign labors. Manufacturing firms like Alcotec have to cut down on the foreign workforce due to the regulation and cannot meet the demands of their customers (Chen, 2014). Hiring firms in Singapore focus on increasing the productivity of both locals and foreign manpower by sending them to training and upgrading programs. With the additional skills and knowledge, these enable them to be able to multi-task and lower the transaction costs of workers. Multi-skilling of workers also enable communications to flow more efficiently and thus, lower any unnecessary costs to the firm (Lazear Gibbs , 2009). Without strong human capital investments, firms will face shortage of manpower or high labor costs which may result in losing its competitiveness. Under the Enlistment Act (Chapter 93) Part VI, employer in Singapore have a duty to release and reinstate Singaporean National Servicemen (NSMen) for call-up for their reservist duties every year. Employers are prohibited to discriminate or dismiss any NSMen for reasons related to their reservist status. One of the reasons employers may avoid hiring Singaporean males is due to their National Service obligations. Every year Singapore males will be called up once or twice for 2-3 weeks for their reservist duties in the army. Work disruptions and discriminations arises towards Singapore males due to these obligations (Koh, 2013). Most employers in Singapore understand the obligations of National Service in Singapore and try to arrange and adjust the workload of employed servicemen during their reservist (Tan, 2013). As ther e are no strong regulations to protect Singaporean males with NS obligations, in regards to competitiveness in the workforce, strong communication channel is very important for work to be handed-over during their reservists. A focus group discussion was also held by Ministry of Defense for employers to help them understand and strengthen the competitiveness of NSMen in their career. Employers are urged to remain supportive for NSMen and manage their commitments (Channel Newsasia, 2013). Smartphones are also allowed in some of the restrictive areas in camps so that NSMen will be able to keep direct contact with their employers and colleagues. Singapore is experiencing low local birthrates and aging population. These would affect the future workforce of Singapore if there are no foreign workers coming in. A statistic shows that by 2030, there will only be 2.1 working citizens for each citizen aged 65 and above (Our Demographic Challenges, 2014). Under the Retirement and Re-employme nt Act (Chapter 274A), employers are prohibited to dismiss any employees, before they attained the retirement age of 62, for a reason based solely on their age. Employees who reached the age of retirement should also be given re-employment options or an employment assistance payment if employees do not accept. These act protects the older workers from being discriminated due to their old age and also enable them to earn income and build up their retirement funds. The main reason why most firms avoid hiring older workers is because they want employees to retain in the firm for a long period of time (Silliker, 2013). Younger managers are also finding it difficult to manage older workers due to the culture of Singapore where the younger generations are supposed to respect the seniors (Toh, 2013). However, there are also advantages in hiring older workers due to their experience and exposure in the workforce. Older workers make excellent mentors and role models to younger workers in the firm which helps in the training of employee. Older workers also possess confidence in their abilities which allows them to make better decisions and sharing ideas (The Daily Post, 2013). Michael Smith, director of Randstad Singapore, states that in order to maintain the low unemployment rate, employer must have strong human resource policies to welcome the older workers and providing them with training to increase their productivity (See Ramesh, 2013). Hiring firms in Singapore should be transparent over the wage negotiation with older workers as most of the older workers demand high salary and compensation perks due to the overconfidence in their abilities (McGrory, 2012). Firms also offer flexible work arrangements for older workers as their goals differs as they age and these would encourage them to stay longer and avoid absenteeism in the firm, reducing high turnover (Koc-Menard, 2009). The legal framework of employment in Singapore influenced many firms to increa se productivity of employees and retention of older workers. Firm with heterogeneous workforce also tend to be more competitive due to shared experience and social norms among employees. These benefits both the firm and the workers and also the economic growth and social aspects of Singapore. Foreign workers are important in Singaporeà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢s workforce but employers need to execute a fair and ethical hiring practices to ensure an efficient working environment and remain competitive. Singapore employers also faces a unique challenge on NSMen but if communications channel are efficient, workloads are being handed-over efficiently and they can be as productive as other employees.
